"The Fault in Our Stars" is...
Hazel Grace is your typical sixteen year old girl, with the addition of having terminal cancer, but this does not stop her from living a normal teenage life full of wonder and angst. She has managed to beat the odds of her condition and live a comfortable life with the help of an experimental drug, Phalanxifor, however, it does not escape the occasional lung issue and inability to sleep without her BiPAP. Otherwise, Hazel lives each day accompanied by Phillip (her oxygen tank) and enjoying time with her family and favorite book, An Imperial Affliction, by Peter Van Houton.
The story opens around Hazel's reluctance in attending another session of Support Group, or as she describes it, "a rotating cast of characters in various states of tumor-driven unwellness," (4). There she unexpectedly meets Augustus Waters, a seventeen year old boy with one leg due to osteosarcoma. Initially, Augustus is at Support Group voluntarily because of his friend Isaac who is diagnosed with a type of cancer in his eyes and must undergo surgery which will blind him permanently, but then the meeting turns into a chance encounter with Hazel.
From the moment the two meet, there is an unexplainable attraction. It unfurls into a devastating love story which includes many new and first experiences, a three-day trip to Amsterdam, ‘blindly’ throwing eggs at a car, and many more metaphorical resonances which reflect upon two average teenagers living through their problems.
This story has a new take on teenage love with all of the components of other love stories, however, it adds uniqueness with the trouble of living on borrowed time. Every event within every page steals your attention and invokes empathy within a set of fictional characters. Discover a tale full of hope, love, and the idea that life is not always as you expect.
