TRIVIA:
(WARNING! Some spoilers present)
1. The title is inspired by a famous line from Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar (Act 1, scene 2). (Wikipedia)
"The nobleman Cassius says to Brutus, 'The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings.'"
2. John Green's initial inspiration for the story came from working as a student chaplain at a children's hospital. He found the children to be as human as healthy people, and wanted to capture the feeling that "the stories that I was reading sort of oversimplified and sometimes even dehumanized them. And I think generally we have a habit of imagining the very sick or the dying as being kind of fundamentally other. I guess I wanted to argue for their humanity, their complete humanity." Green was also inspired by Ester Earl, a a girl whom Green was friends with who passed at the age of 16 of thyroid cancer. (Wikipedia)

3. The character Hazel Grace takes a medication known as "Phalanxifor" which helps to alleviate some of her cancer symptoms. However, this drug, like many elements in his book, is fictional. The drug is actually reflecting on the existing drug Hereceptin (aka Trastuzumab).
4. Much of Hazel's outlook on life is also in response to her favorite book book An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houton. This book and its author are also fictional. Another fun element created by Green.
